East Mainland

On Wednesday, we toured the east mainland, starting with a tour of Highland Park Distillery. Don't judge, it was the only time slot available. Highland Park has been in business since 1798 and neither the buildings nor the process have changed much since. Highland Park makes single malt, peated whisky. Following the tour, we were able to enjoy a taste of both 12 year old and 18 year old. Smooth.

From Highland Park, we went south, across the Churchill barriers to the Italian Chapel. The chapel is an amazing testament to the craftsmanship of the Italian POWs who were stationed here during WWII. The barriers changed the life of the islanders who lived south of  Mainland Orkney. They were no longer isolated and dependent on ferries, but could now travel across the causeways to the mainland.

We stopped at Sands Hotel for a bite to eat and then it was on to the Fossil and Heritage Museum.

We ended the day with a lovely meal at the Ferry Inn in Stromness.
