New Digitized Collections On NLS Website

The National Library of Scotland has added two new digitized collections to their website database. The first is a collection of medical documents from the British Raj. The 'Medicine - Vaccination' shows British efforts to vaccinate the Indian population against smallpox. http://digital.nls.uk/indiapapers/ 

The second collection is a selection of British Army, Navy and Air Force lists. These lists give details of officers who served during the First and Second World Wars.

Forces War Records Launches Online Digital Library

Forces War Records announces launch of online digital library of books, newspapers and magazines, some more than a hundred years old. 

“The library holds a huge catalogue of interesting documents, many of which chronicle the movements of regiments, ships and other units during the world wars and beyond”.

Forces War Records Searchable Database

Forces War Records www.forces-war-records.co.uk has a fully searchable database. The database is searchable by service number, nationality service type or by specific years.

Search results provide an index of all personnel with the name you are searching, giving you rank and record name as filters. You can then view the record for the person you feel might be your ancestor. The initial search is free but you must then subscribe to view the records. Subscriptions are:

RAF Muster Rolls for 1918 Available from FindMyPast

FindMyPast has added the Royal Air Force Muster Rolls for 1918. Although searchable by name, the men are indexed by air force number. Information available through these Muster Rolls include:

• Job in the RAF
• Rank
• Date and terms of enlistment
• Rate of pay

The men in these muster rolls originally enlisted with either the Royal Flying Corps or the Royal Naval Air Service. The  RNAS and the RFC merged in the spring of 1918 to form the RAF.
