Researching Family in the British Isles Mini Institute

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP) has partnered with the International Society for British Genealogy and Family History (ISBGFH) to conduct a four day program of researching family in the British Isles.  ISBGFH conducts the British Institute held annually in Salt Lake City to provide week-long education by well-known genealogists on the British Isles.  On 13-16 August 2018, the ISBGFH has arranged for several presenters to provide an overview of researching British Isles topics at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.  These presentations will explore DNA, Scotland, Ireland and England research.  London based genetic genealogist Dr. Maurice Gleeson, MB, will present on DNA and Irish research, Christine Woodcock, from Genealogy Tours of Scotland, will discuss Scottish research, and Frank Southcott, President, ISBGFH, will explore the English records.

The HSP program is designed to be attended either on a given day and topic or in its entirety.  It is an in-depth overview of British Isles research and enhances attendance for those who may desire to attend the British Institute where morning instruction and afternoon independent research are conducted in the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City on a country topic.  More information is available on the British Institute at www.isbgfh.org.

The HSP curriculum for each day involves 4 presentations of one hour and fifteen minutes each.  Monday, 13 August 2018, Dr Gleeson, MB, will explore advances made in DNA and how it can be applied to your British Isles research.  Christine Woodcock will discuss the uniqueness of Scottish research on Tuesday, 14 August 2018.  Dr. Gleeson will return on Wednesday, 15 August 2018, to present on the ever increasing resources available on Irish research, and Thursday, 16 August 2018, Frank Southcott, will examine English genealogical resources.

The cost of the four day program will be $299.  Individual program days are available for $99 per day.  Limited consultation slots will be available on DNA, Scotland and Ireland during the program for $125 hour.

Peggy Clemens Lauritzen, AG, was involved in genealogy before she was even born. The daughter of avid genealogists, she was spending time in courthouses and cemeteries while other children were playing on swings and going to the beach. The love of her family’s history has never left her. With her experience serving as a Family History Director, she frequently speaks at genealogical societies, workshops, seminars, and webinars where she loves bringing genealogy to life. Some of those would include The Ohio Genealogical Society, The Ohio State University, Brigham Young University, and many other state and local genealogy societies. She has recently completed several Legacy QuickGuides on Appalachia, and is a well-known webinar presenter. She is also an instructor at Ancestry Academy, GRIP, and Family Tree University.

British Institute 2015 Registration Now Open For Members

In 2015, the International Society of British Genealogy and Family History (ISBGFH) will celebrate 15 years of providing the British Institute. They have a terrific line-up of lecturers/tract leaders for their 2015 British Institute, being held September 21-25, 2015 in Salt Lake City. Members only registration is now open.  

Members save $100 on their registration by registering before Feb 28, 2015.

500,000 Photographs of Barnardos Children Up For Grabs

One of the oldest, most significant photographic collections in the shaping of Canada is up for grabs - those of the children who came to Canada as Dr Barnados Little Immigrants.  

Barnardo began photographing the children that came into his care at his first home in Stepney in 1875. 

Over half a million photographs are being digitized in Manchester. Once the digitization process has been completed, the original images are to be destroyed, all in the name of freeing up storage space.  

Not only were the British Home Children dispensable as people, now their images are also apparently dispensable.  Barnardos is willing to hand the collection of originals over to an interested organization, archive or group of individuals. Ideally, in Canada, this would be to Library and Archives Canada, however, we already know the state that organization is in and it is highly unlikely that they will do anything to pursue these precious memories of some of our early nation builders. The importance of these photographs to the national memory and social history of Canadacannot be underestimated.

BIFHSGO Call for Papers - Conference 2013

The British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa (BIFHSGO) is seeking proposals for presentations at its 19th annual conference, September 20-22, 2013 to be held in Ottawa at Library and Archives Canada. The focus for 2013 year will be on Ireland. Proposals for other presentations besides those on Ireland are also invited as well as proposals for pre-conference workshops or seminars on Friday, September 20, 2013. RAF Muster Rolls for 1918 Available from FindMyPast

FindMyPast has added the Royal Air Force Muster Rolls for 1918. Although searchable by name, the men are indexed by air force number. Information available through these Muster Rolls include:

• Job in the RAF
• Rank
• Date and terms of enlistment
• Rate of pay

The men in these muster rolls originally enlisted with either the Royal Flying Corps or the Royal Naval Air Service. The  RNAS and the RFC merged in the spring of 1918 to form the RAF.

British Newspaper Archive is LIVE

The British Newspaper Archive talked about in an earlier blog post has gone live, havng been launched today. Scottish newspapers from Ayr (Ayr Advertiser), Aberdeen (Aberdeen Journal), Fife, Angus, Dundee (Dundee Courier, Dundee Advertiser), Edinburgh (Evening Times), Glasgow (Herald), Falkirk (Herald), and Stirling (Stirling Observer) are just a few. You can narrow your search by place, county, region, date, or name of newspaper.

You need to create an account, but it is free to join. There are various subscriptions to view the images.
